Martin McGagh is an artist and photographer working between Ireland and The Netherlands. He is a graduate of ATU Galway’s Film & Documentary BA, and Ulster University’s Photography MFA programme. He has exhibited at PhotoIreland and the Hamburg Triennial of Photography. In 2020 - with the support of Culture Ireland - a sequence of images from his project The Cedar Room was included in Beyond The Image: Bertien van Manen & Friends, a major retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam. In 2021 and 2023 he was the recipient of an Arts Council of Ireland Visual Arts Bursary Award. He participated in In Our Own Image: Photography & The Social Gaze, a landmark survey at Photo Museum Ireland in 2022; and in Changing States: Ireland In The 21st Century, an extensive group show of contemporary Irish photography at Haus am Kleistpark, Berlin in 2024.

McGagh’s work currently pivots around the safety/entrapment paradox central to experiences of home or social belonging. He’s pursuing a number of thematically interlinked projects, fusing documentary narrative strategies, portraiture, personal experience and broader social context.
